Start with the unit on the price
A price per kWh charges for energy delivered. A price per minute or hour charges for time. A session fee is a separate charge for starting a visit. Look for minimum charges, time bands and the point at which an idle fee begins.
ChargePoint says station owners or roaming partners set prices; the payment channel can matter. Electrify America directs drivers to the app or charger for location-specific pricing. A network name alone is not a quote for your stop.
A worked charging-cost example
These are hypothetical prices, not a current station tariff. Suppose you buy 30 kWh at $0.40 per kWh, with a $1 session fee and $3 parking charge.
| Component | Cost |
|---|---|
| 30 kWh × $0.40 | $12 |
| Session fee | $1 |
| Parking | $3 |
| Subtotal before tax or other charges | $16 |
Use billed energy for an energy tariff. A change in battery percentage is not a bill. For a time tariff, you also need the session duration; dividing by the charger’s advertised maximum power does not reliably predict that duration.
Compare the whole visit
- Check the exact location, payment method, plan and time of day.
- Read parking, access, minimum-session and idle-fee conditions.
- Compare the same amount of energy with the same fee components included.
- If a component is missing, leave the total unknown instead of declaring one stop cheaper.
Our station pages preserve dated tariff text where a reliable all-in price cannot be calculated. Confirm current terms with the operator before starting.
When does a membership pay for itself?
Divide the monthly subscription cost by the saving per kWh, if the plans otherwise have the same charges. In a hypothetical plan, a $7 monthly fee and $0.10 saving per kWh break even at 70 kWh per month.
Use your expected charging on that network, not all the energy your car uses. Different fees, introductory offers or billing periods can change the calculation. Read the current plan terms before subscribing.
Complimentary energy can still come with parking or access costs. See how to evaluate free charging.
